FERNANDO ALONSO EDIT REVEALED
Welcome to the episode number eight of the Developer Diary Docuedit F1 2024 season, where I will explain and to show more info about the latest edit I’ve made about the Aston Martin F1 team driver: Fernando Alonso. The edit is really good I have to say in terms of storytelling and montage. It’s just about four-five minutes long, but it resumes very well the Fernando Alonzo season in 2024.
The Fernando Alonso season, last year, in 2024 was not so exciting and so great as it was in 2023, when he had a much better car, the Aston Martin in 2023 was able to score multiple podiums. Alonso got eight podiums in 2023, but in this 2024 season the car started as the fifth fastest and, unfortunately, in Aston Martin were not able to develop the car as it should be. In the last races of the season they were the eighth-seventh even the ninth team sometimes. That means that I have not so many highlights to include in the edit in terms of Fernando Alonso fighting for getting podiums and victories as he did in 2023. That’s why I was thinking in how I would be able to represent the Fernando Alonso season in 2024 without so many highlights.
The idea, basically, was to explain through images that, at the beginning of the season, the first four-five races Alonso he had a car that was not so fast in race as it was the previous season, but still being very fast in qualifying. At the beginning of the season Fernando Alonso was qualifying in top five places: in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China. These words from Fernando Alonso during the post qualifying interview after the first qualifying session of the 2024 season in the Bahrain Grand Prix proves the good performance shown by the Aston Martin car at the beginning of the season:
«We were thinking that we were not that fast compared Red Bull and Ferrari and now we are in the same tenth of them in qualifying, which is a surprise»
The turning point for Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin in the 2024 season happened in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, where Alonso suffered a crash in Free Practice 3. That accident affected to Alonso to in the the qualifying session celebrated some hours after that crash. Alonso lose the confidence and the trust he had on the car. In addition, that weekend, at Imola, Aston Martin brought very important upgrades that didn’t worked. That episode at Imola was the turning point for Aston Martin. From Imola to the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, the car development was terrible. Every upgrade they brought, most of them, didn’t worked, making the car slower through the season.
The structure of the edit follows the circumstances mentioned before: The first part of the edit was focused in the great car Alonso and Aston Martin had in qualifying.Then, you will be able to watch in the edit the turning point at Imola, followed by some bad races, mistakes and incidents Fernando Alonso have after the weekend of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The edit tries to reflect the suffer and extra efforts Alonso had to do on track due to he was driving a car that was not so competitive as it was the previous year. Watching the edit you can feel the frustration of Fernando Alonso being passed by multiple drivers every race.
At the same time, despite all these difficulties I also wanted to reflect in the edit that Fernando Alonso still being one of the greatest drivers out there. Remember that he is two times Formula 1 World Champion. I tried to find as much highlights as possible of Fernando that season, in 2024, like some overtakes he did to different drivers. Anyway the most important part of the edit is in the last two minutes, when you will be able to watch a super creative montage, that includes visual effects that are inspired in the Fernando Alonso philosophy on track. It’s about the Samurai concept life Fernando Alonso have on his life. He really like the samurai culture, the Japanese Samurai culture. He read different books, he talked about it in different interviews during these years:
«A Samurai and a racing driver are very linked»
He explain in that phrase the relationship between a Samurai and a racing driver in the way both living life, risking all and being in danger, but always trying to overcome difficulties even if they have to die, no matter what they will fight forever. That mentality suits very well in the Fernando Alonso mindset and driving style. That’s why in the edit I wanted to represent this Samurai concept Fernando Alonso explained during all these years. All this elements and concepts around Alonso are represented in the final minute of this edit, adding some surprises and special characters involved in Aston Martin for the near future. UPDATING PREVIOUS EDIT WHERE ALONSO WAS INVOLVED
If you are following this series of episodes about the Developer Diary – Docuedit F1 2024, you know that I’m working in multiple edits for this project. One of these edits that was announced in the All Access Episode 1 of the Developer Diary involves to Fernando Alonso and George Russell. That edit is related to the incident George Russell and Fernando Alonso had in the 2024 Australian Grand Prix. During the last lap George Russell was chasing Alonso for P6, but Russell crashed in the first corner of the sector 2. The stewards decided to penalize Fernando Alonso because they interpret that Alonso back off before the corner where Russell crash, causing a very dangerous situation.
