LIAM LAWSON-FRANCO COLAPINTO-CHECO PÉREZ EDIT REVEALED
Very welcome to the episode number nine of the Developer Diary – Docuedit Formula 1 2024 season. You will get more information about an spectacular edit, that was really hard to make. That edit involves the Mexican driver driving for Red Bull Racing in 2024, Sergio Perez, Liam Lawson from New Zeeland and Franco Colapinto from Argentina. At the beginning of the edit had to include notes where I explain why Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto are racing in Formula One during the 2024 season, the circumstances that lead them to do it and in which team they will be racing for. Remember: Liam Lawson started racing in Formula One in 2024 from round 19 of 24, substituting Daniel Ricciardo in Visa Cash App Racing Bulls. Meanwhile Franco Colapinto debut was in round 16 of 24 substituting the american, Logan Sargeant in Williams Racing.
During the first part of the edit you will be able to watch highlights mixed from Lawson and Colapinto, including some of the moments of the season where they did extraordinary performances. For example, franco Colapinto passing to Q3 in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix or the great qualifying in Brazil done by Liam Lawson, passing to Q3 and reaching a great sixth place for the starting grid of the Sunday’s race. These highlights from both drivers are mixed with different actions and moments where you can see Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto racing against different drivers on track, doing some overtakes.
At the middle point of the edit you is where the third driver involved in this edit, Sergio Pérez, enters in the video. You will be able to see an incredible edit about the crash that Carlos Sainz and Checo Pérez had in Azerbaijan, in the Baku street circuit, during the last lap of the race. Remember that this crash was really important and significant,not only because it was a very serious accident. Pérez was fighting for a Podium since long time, since round four or five of the 2024 season. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was the round 17 of the 2024 calendar. I’m sure you watched a lot of times this replay of this accident in Baku, but the way I was able to edited in this video make it even more scary to see, being shown by multiple cameras in a few seconds that put in perspective how much dangerous is driving a Formula One car on street circuits.
Now the question is: Why is this accident in Baku at the middle point of the Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto edit? My intention making this edit was to try to explain in images why Franco Colapinto and Liam Lawson were the starting point to put in risk the Sergio Perez seat for the 2025 Formula One season. At that point of the season Pérez was involved in different rumors that said that maybe he would not be able to finish the season in Red Bull Racing, or even that he would not racing in 2025 because he would be substituted by another driver. Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto driver were in that rumors, being candidates at some point for the Red Bull seat where was Checo Pérez. In the case of Liam Lawson rumors were stronger because he was driving for Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, which is the minor team of the Red Bull company, that is like a second division of the major team, Red Bull Racing, were was racing Sergio Pérez at. So Lawson had chances in case he would do great performances on track in the last races of the 2024 season to be promote to the biggest team.
In the second half of the edit you will be able to see some difficulties, mistakes and errors Pérez had during the season, especially in the last races where, at that point, Franco and Lawson were racing. During this part of the edit I was trying to find interviews where Pérez was explaining and talking about the problems he had with the car. I have to say that for me was really easy to find these interviews, where Pérez was blaming about the car and trying to explain why he was not so quick as his teammate Max Verstappen. These are some examples of the words of Pérez about the car performance during the season:
«We have this disconnection with the balance the rear axle I was, struggling quite a lot with it. Itreally difficult to put the lap together, into the low speed I cannot break»
The contrast between the crash at Baku of Pérez plus his explanations about all the difficulties he had during this season to understand his car by one hand and the great performances of Franco Colapinto in Williams and Liam Lawson in Racing Bulls at some moments of the final races of the season creates the point the full edit. The edit makes to the viewer to fully understand the whole picture of the situation of these three drivers ahead of the next season in 2025.
Finally in the last part of the edit you will be able to watch the most intense moments of each driver, including highs and downs of each one, overtakes, mistakes, crashes, Bu the most important highlights are the ones where these three drivers crosses their ways on track during some of the races. For example in the Mexican Grand Prix Pérez and Lawson had a very hard fight where they were blaming each other and pushing each other off the track. Pérez said very bad words about Lawson for the movement he did in Mexico. In that same race, later on, Liam Lawson also had a little incident with Franco Colapinto where Lawson broke a little bit his front wing after a contact with with the rear tyre of the Williams of Franco Colapinto. Not only in Mexico Pérez and Lawson found each other on track. In the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, in Brazil, both fought for position on track, during the sprint race and the Sunday’s race, winning Lawson both duels. In the case of Colapinto you will be able to watch all serious accidents he had during the races he was in Formula One, for example in Vegas or in Brazil where he crashed twice, in qualifying and race. He had more accidents and incidents than Lawson in the races they were competing in F1, that’s something you will realize watching the edit.
all this cocktail of highlights between these drivers, showing the highs and downs and different moments in the season were they coincide on track builds a fantastic a very intense three and a half minutes long edit that tries to explain why at the end of the 2024 season Sergio Pérez was substituted by Liam Lawson in Red Bull Racing for the 2025 Formula One season. Ending the edit with the announcement of that event and some words said by Liam Lawson in one of the interviews he made in the period in was racing in Formula One during the last races of the 2024 season:
«I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to win, and that’s what focused on doing.»
Buy the other hand, Franco Colapinto moved to BWT Alpine F1 team for the 2025 season as a reserve driver, but with high chances to be competing as a official driver at some point of the 2025 Formula One season in case Jack Doohan was not performing well.
